Another good question from the dinner was "How much spending money should I take?" First remember that if the itinerary says we're going to see something the entrance is included. So is breakfast and dinner so don't worry about those. I recommend about $15-20 per day for lunch and snacks. That's equivalent to about 14-18 Euro. Then plan on $20-50 for souvenirs per country depending on how many trinkets you might be bringing home for family and friends. Then think about any special things you want to see that might charge an entrance fee and how you'll get there and back. I always like to go to the science museum in Florence = $13. Everyone will have their 'must see' list.
So here's my breakdown. Everyone's spending habits are different so bring a little more if you think you'll need it.
Meals & snacks- $350
Souvenirs - $250
Laundrettes - $25
Extra entrances - $70
Transportation - $35
Total - $730
I think that's a very generous spending plan. Most will be able to make do with much less (none of my own kids spent more than $500 and that was on longer trips) but in this instance I always like to err on the side of too much rather than not enough.
Make sure you have a day's worth of spending cash in the different types of money you need before we leave. I recommend about 40 British Pounds, 30 Euro, and 20 Swiss Francs. That way you can wait to find a safe ATM before you get money from your account. You can order foreign currency from your bank but do that soon so it has time to arrive. You can also go to the main branch of Zions downtown. They have an exchange desk with foreign currency on hand.
Last thing for tonight. Make sure you have a safe place to keep your money. I recommend a neck pouch/wallet but some are more comfortable with a money belt. Either way, wear it always and keep your valuables (cash, cards, passport) safe!
